Our Principal, Katharine Layne, has the experience and expertise needed when engaging a specialist family lawyer to support and advocate for clients throughout their family law journey. Katharine has worked in the legal field since 2007 and practised exclusively in family law for over 13 years. She is passionate about providing expert & practical legal advice and representation to ensure the best outcome for her clients and their families as they move forward.
Katharine completed a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in history, and a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Tasmania, along with a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at the Australian National University. She commenced practising law in Hobart where she also volunteered her time in a number of community organisations, including as a board member of 7RPH Print Radio. Professionally, she was a committee member of the Tasmanian Women Lawyers, the Domestic Violence Coordinating Committee of Southern Tasmania, and the Vic/Tas Child Support Stakeholder Committee.
In 2014, Katharine completed a Masters of Law at the Australian National University. Following this, she relocated to Victoria where she commenced heading the family law team at an award winning Melbourne boutique law firm and in 2015, Katharine was Accredited by the Law Institute of Victoria as a Specialist in Family Law.
In late 2020, following a tree change to Gippsland, Katharine founded Layne Lawyers, a dedicated specialist family law practice to ensure families in Gippsland and South East Melbourne have access to expert family law specialists without the need to travel to the city.
When not in the office, Katharine might be found spending time with her two daughters during their breaks from university, or, more likely, toddler wrangling her very energetic young son.
